Look
for figs to establish more of a presence in the supermarket,
but not just in the produce area next to the dates and pomegranates,
or in the cookie section, a la Fig Newtons. Take a look on gourmet
shelves, and figs are reaching out to us as never before in
the form of jams, tapenades, marinades, and sauces. A good source
of calcium and iron, figs were the symbol of peace and prosperity
in ancient times, and make for a soothing, comfort food in these
times. One company in San Francisco is even selling fig balsamic
vinegar, available through your gourmet grocer or call 1-888-693-5800
for more information.
