Overheard at the Bistro

Shriveled but Standing Tall -

Dried Plums? The California Prune Board wants to give prunes a new, chic image by calling the otherwise frumpy fruit by its more botanical name -- a dried plum. Permission for the name change is pending at the Food and Drug Administration. Plums and prunes have an outstanding reputation with health experts, who feel that even young people can benefit from the fiber and sorbitol in prunes, which may prevent colon cancer in later life. Prunes are high in potassium and contain many minerals, including boron which has been shown to promote bone density.

Prunes have gained popularity over the years. The International Prune Association offers creative recipes and suggestions, like chocolate-covered prunes, prunes with pork or other roasts, or simply added to champagne flutes. And, in France, there is an entire museum devoted to prunes–the Musee du Pruneau.

Never Run of the Mill -

A Better PeppermillIn the engineering world, there is always a desire to invent a better widget. So too is this desire in the kitchen, where pepper grinders are constantly being updated. A new one called Millennium allows you to choose from five settings. Made by William Bounds, Ltd., the pepper mill is good looking, has a comfortable winding mechanism, is lightweight and filled with organic white, black and green peppercorns. The company's battery-operated mill is slightly heavier, but easier to use.
