Once
upon a time French toast was served pretty plain, made with egg-dipped
bread that had been fried and then smothered in pancake syrup. But
these days, the options are limitless from using a variety of breads
to dipping batters, making it one of America's favorite breakfast
foods. Here are a few French-toast making ideas:
Challah bread, croissants, even slices of pound cake make great
foundations for a special French toast.
Make a French toast sundae just by cooking up a plain recipe but
slicing the bread on the diagonal and adding several pieces of cut
fruit and a dollop of whipped cream.
Using 1-inch slices of crusty Italian bread, cut pockets through
the top of the slice and add pieces of chocolate and nuts before
dipping and frying.
Use eggnog as the dipping batter for intense vanilla and buttery
flavor.
