It
used to be that if a vegetarian was coming for dinner, you knew
he or she was basically not a meat eater, preferring mostly vegetables.
Oh, for those simpler days. Now, there are almost as many kinds
of vegetarians as there are vegetables!
In
the interest of clarity, The National Restaurant Association has
released the latest in vegetarian verbiage so this may help clear
things up at your next dinner party.
Vegans:
Eat no animal product or by-product.
Ovo-vegetarians:
Eat no meat, fish, or poultry, but will eat eggs.
Lacto-vegetarians:
Eat no meat, fish, or fowl, but will eat dairy products.
Pesco-vegetarians:
Eat no meat or fowl, but will eat fish.
Pollo-vegetarians:
Eat no meat or fish, but will eat chickens, turkeys, ducks and other
poultry.
